The Ultimate Flyer is an elegant, hand-made beauty that glides and turns like no other sled you’ve ever tried. The entire front section of the sled pivots, letting you make much sharper turns than on a conventional flexible flyer. And, it looks great standing on the porch in between sled runs. The Flyer is made to last for generations: thick birch planks, hand-carved willow hand rails and stainless-steel hardware make it tough, and we can hand-paint a child’s name right onto the sled.
When we build an Ultimate Flyer, we start with planks of beautiful, golden birch. We plane down the planks, sand them, burn in the Mountain Boy brand, and give every piece several coats of marine-grade finish. We attach hand rails of hand-carved willow, giving each sled a unique look and feel. Copper ferrules between the body of the sled and the rails add to the rustic look, while adding substantial strength. Just how strong? Well, some of our crazier fans take them off 6' jumps and see how much airtime they can get.
On the bottom of the sled (see photo), we attach a pair of proprietary, custom-molded plastic skids. We like to think of them as greased lightning -- they are very fast, but their shape allows for smooth, decisive turning. Contoured runners bite into the snow or ice so you can carve down hard-packed slopes, while a solid bottom of custom-molded slippery plastic lets the sled float through soft snow.
Our crew is made up of people who are both sledding fanatics and woodworkers – as you can imagine, they are always trying to design each sled to be as beautiful, functional and sturdy as possible.

Remember those strong old Flexible Flyers, the ones that refused to break? Our Classic Flyer is what a runner sled should be: tough, with thick kiln-dried planks of beautiful northern birch and extra-thick powder-coated steel runners. We paid particular attention to the "knees," the bent steel parts that connect the runners to the top. On mass-market runner sleds, these are the weakest point and collapse easily. On the Classic, the knees are made of extra-thick steel designed to handle lots of abuse.
We use only stainless-steel bolts, and the solid birch top makes the Classic the most sturdy Flyer you've ever seen. This year, we added willow handrails for better grip. This heirloom-quality sled is designed to last for more than one lifetime.

Sometimes the perfect gift is something extraordinary -- beautiful, unique, playful. The Elegant Flyer is just that, a sled built like a piece of fine furniture that trumps everything else on the sledding hill. Each is made of fine figured woods right here in our Silverton workshop, and each sled is signed and numbered by the sledmaker. The design follows that of the Ultimate Flyer, with patent-pending steering and durable black plastic skids on the bottom.
Most Elegant Flyers are made from curly maple and flame birch (shown at right and below). We also make a few special sleds of cherry, walnut, and exotic woods.

For many people, this is the perfect sled -- the same design as our Classic Flyer, but built with some of the most beautiful wood imaginable. We use highly figured maple, sanded smooth and hand-rubbed with a marine-grade finish. The sled is perfect on a wall, and even better on a good steep hill.
Stainless steel hardware is used throughout, and the powder-coated metal runners have extra-strong "knees" (the bent-metal parts that connect the runners to the sled). The patent-pending double-pivot design gives fabulous turning power, even on slick ice.
The Royal Flyer is hand-made in our Silverton workshop in limited quantities; each is signed and numbered by the sledmaker.

Kicksleds
|
The kicksled is a small sled consisting of a chair mounted on a pair of flexible metal runners which extend backward to about twice the chair's length. There is a handlebar attached to the top of the chair back. "Kicksled" is a direct translation of the Finnish word "potkukelkka". Some other possible translations are "kicker" and "chair-sled".
The kicksled is driven forward by the driver standing on one runner, kicking backwards on the ground with the other foot, hence the name. The flexibity of the runners allows the driver to steer the kicksled by twisting the handlebars. One can have a passenger or luggage on the chair seat.
A kicksled can only be used on hard, slippery surfaces like ice or hardpacked snow. On very smooth, bare ice, the use of traction devices like spiked shoes or crampons improves kicking force. On level ground, one can easily reach a speed of 15 to 20 km/h, and much faster on downhill section or with a strong tail wind.
The kicksled is in common use in Norway, Sweden and Finland, especially where roads are not sanded or salted. There it serves as a winter substitute for a bicycle.
It is also an excellent means of travelling over frozen lakes to go ice fishing or just to explore the lake. Kicksledding on lake ice shares many of the same features as Tour skating.

The sled body is made of American white ash. We make the very comfortable slatted seat from many different hardwoods. Screws are stainless steel, and connecting bolts are high-grade anodized steel.
The runners are highly flexible tempered steel, with polished and waxed edges. Rings are welded to the front of each runner, making it simple to attach a bridle and tugline for dogsledding.
Multiple coats of UV-resistant finish mean the sled can be left outside for extended periods without damage.
The handle on each sled is a specially chosen native willow branch, hand-carved for a perfect fit and polished to show its natural beauty. No two handles are alike, and each has its own unique look and feel.
Because each kicksled is a one-of-a-kind work, each is signed and numbered on the bottom by the sledmaker.
You can choose from two types of kicksled: the classic Silverton Kicksled, which seats one adult or child and our unique Double Kicksled, which seats two children and has bright red hand rails.
Folding down the kicksled is easy, and reduces the height of the sled from 36" to 7" -- just right for putting it on top of your car or into the attic for summer storage.

- Includes an elastic pocket behind the seat that fits a sweater or lunchbox.
- Welded rings on the front of the runners make it easy to harness a dog; we recommend our Mushing Package (below) for safe dogsledding.
